Information Available In This Collection

The Tennessee Death Records Index typically reveals the subject's full name, the place where the death occurred, the date of the death, and lists the page and volume where the death certificate is filed. In certain cases, a married woman might be filed under her husband's name (i.e. Mrs. John Smith). Early death certificates weren't always filed completely, so any missing information is likely due to an incomplete or damaged source record.

About the Tennessee State Library and Archives

The Tennessee State Library and Archives is the state repository for historical state record and falls under the Tennessee Secretary of State office. In 1908, Tennessee began requiring that all death and birth records be filed with the county. From 1908 through 1912, death certificates were often incomplete or missing, as this new regulation wasn't as strictly enforced as it was starting in 1914. These death certificates are nonetheless available to the public.

The Tennessee State Library and Archives has put together electronic indexes containing the death certificate record number associated with each name between 1908 and 1912 and is organized alphabetically by last name. The second Tennessee Death Record Index is divided by year from 1914 to 1932, which is further organized by last name. Once the death record number is obtained from the index, the Tennessee State Library and Archives can easily locate that death certificate.

The Tennessee State Library and Archives features a myriad of historical records in addition to death certificates for research and genealogical purposes. This includes burial records of federal soldiers, African American historical records, early court records, census records and Cherokee records. They also feature military records from the War of 1812, Civil War, Korean War, Vietnam War, World War I, and the Spanish American War, which are all available as public records.

The Tennessee State Library Archives welcomes visitors who wish to search their collection of historical records, including death certificates. However, using the online index, individuals may use the record number corresponding to the death record desired to mail the request for the complete record. Mailed requests often take between three and four weeks to complete.
