About the Utah State Archives

The Utah State Archives holds the historic county clerk birth records between 1898 and 1905 not only for Weber County, but for all Utah counties established at that time. In 1898, Utah started requiring that both midwives and doctors record every birth they participated in with the local county clerk office. If no one attended the birth, the parents were required to register the birth themselves. After 1905, however, Utah required births to be registered through the Utah Department of Health's State Bureau of Vital Statistics.

Utah State Archives input the data for Weber County Birth Register into an online index that is available to the public as a searchable database. The physical copies of these birth records are stored chronologically by year and are further organized by the order of report, instead of being ordered by birth date. This is why the searchable index helps because the report number will appear for a name search. A full birth certificate filed will include the infant's name, legitimacy, race, gender, birth place and date, the parents' names, who attended the birth, and the record number.

The Utah State Archives keeps additional types of historical records pertaining to Utah's history, including death certificates, marriage licenses, divorce records, probate records and adoption records, which are accessible to the public only if older than 100 years. They also maintain military records, including records pertaining to the Civil War, Spanish American War, Philippines Insurrection and the Mexican Border Campaign. Land and mining records, as well as historical court documents, are also kept at the Utah State Archives and are available to the public for research.
