Allegany County, NY Birth, Death, Marriage, Divorce Records
Allegany County, which derived its name from the river of the same name that runs through the region, was founded in 1806 from land that was removed from nearby Genesee County. With less than 1,000 residents, the county seat of Belmont, NY, has only a tiny fraction of the total county population of nearly 50,000, however it is the location of all local county government agencies. The Allegany County Clerk is in Room #18 of the county courthouse at 7 Court Street. The Clerk maintains all property and court records, with the exception of criminal cases which are maintained by the County Court. The town of Wellsville is home to the Allegany County Historical Society which operates out of the David A. Howe Public Library at 155 North Main in Room 201. The Society has a large number of records on file, and they also accept research requests through the mail.
