Allen Parish was founded in 1912 after separating from the neighboring Calcasieu Parish. Approximately 25,000 people populate the Parish which labels itself Gateway to Cajun Country due to its northerly location. The Parish is home to the West Bay Wildlife Management Area, a 60,000 acre game preserve that holds wild deer, turkeys, smaller game, and others. 1,500 are available for hunting, and the area is also a prime location for camping.
