The land that became Arlington County was originally donated by Virginia to the US government to be part of the District of Columbia. In 1801, it was named Alexandria County, but Congress returned the land to the Commonwealth of Virginia in 1846. In 1920, the state legislature changed the county's name to Arlington to avoid confusion with the adjacent City of Alexandria.
