Bath County, Virginia, was settled in 1745 by pioneers, most of whom were of Scotch-Irish descent; many were educated, Presbyterian men from Ulster, Ireland. John Lewis settled with his wife, Margaret Lynn, northwest of Staunton, Virginia, in 1732 at Fort Lewis. Their son Andrew, along with Thomas Bullitt, obtained a patent for a Hot Springs tract and built a hotel. In 1790, Bath County was created from the counties of Augusta, Botetourt and Greenbrier. By the early 1800s, records show that 6,000 visitors were coming to the springs annually.
