Berkeley County public vital records can be obtained from the Berkeley County Court Clerk if the records are from before 1917. These generally include birth records after 100 years as well as death, marriage, and divorce records after 50 years. Birth and death records from 1917 on are available to family members from the Health Statistics Center. Berkeley County was created in 1772 from part of Frederick County, Virginia; it then included the present Jefferson and Morgan Counties. During the Civil War, most residents sided with the South.
