Alabama vital records were among the earliest subject to registration: 1881. The Act that year required registration of all Alabama birth records and all Alabama death records with a county health official and that the county registry books be filed with the county probate judge. Registration at the state level was mandated as of January 1908, so records prior to 1908 can be found at county probate courts, although many old records no longer exist. Certified copies of birth and death certificates must be requested from the Alabama Center for Health Statistics (ACHS) or the county health department, but certified birth records are restricted to immediate family for 125 years and death records for 25 years.
