Although Colorado enacted a law in 1875 to require registration of birth and death records, compliance was minimal and not enforced. Early Colorado vital records may be found in county courthouses, county health departments, and online through the Colorado State Archives. Genealogists may want to reference The Guide to Vital Statistics of Colorado, prepared by the Colorado Historical Records Survey, which describes the records held at public archives as well as church archives. Statewide registration of Colorado death records began in 1900 and of Colorado birth records in 1910. While certified copies of birth certificates are restricted, copies of death certificates will be issued to any family relation for genealogical research. Requests for certified copies should be made to the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment, Vital Records Section in person or by mail. Online requests can be made through VitalChek.
