Spanish explorer, Hernando de Soto, discovered Mississippi in 1540 as part of his quest for gold. Under Pierre le Moyne d'Iberville, the French established the first permanent settlement in the region now known as Ocean Springs in 1699. In 1763, Great Britain claimed the area, ceding it to the United States after the French and Indian War in 1783. The Mississippi State Department of Health has Mississippi birth records and Mississippi death records dating back to November 1, 1912. These Mississippi vital records are available for a fee and with proper photo identification. Payment may be made to the department by personal check, bank or postal money order, or bank cashier's check. See http://www.msdh.state.ms.us for information on how to obtain certified copies of birth and death records.
