Missouri vital records have been maintained by the Missouri Department of Health and Senior Services, Bureau of Vital Records as of 1910, with certified birth and death certificates available from the Bureau or from local county health departments. An 1863 non-compulsory birth registration law allowed each county recorder of deeds to record births; these early Missouri birth records are in regular deed or marriage deed books, with no index. There was an 1883 law requiring the recording of births and deaths at the county level, but it was repealed in 1893. Early St. Louis birth (1870-1910) and death records (1850-1910) are at the Missouri State Archives; early Kansas City birth and death records (1874-1910) are at Kansas City Vital Records. The Missouri Birth and Death Records Database project has abstracts of pre-1910 births and deaths online at the Missouri State Archives website, as well as 1910-1960 Missouri death records certificates.
