Nevada birth and death records dating from July 1, 1911, are maintained by the Nevada State Department of Human Resources, Health Division, Office of Vital Records and Statistics. These Nevada vital records are confidential; certified copies are issued only to those with tangible interest. Although these records are also held by county recorders and county health officers, only the Office of Vital Statistics is allowed to issue certified copies, requested by mail or online through VitalChek. Some counties have birth and death records dating to 1887 at the county recorder's office; the statewide Nevada birth records index does not include these early records. The only sources for births pre-1887 are newspapers or church records. County coroners issue burial certificates and physicians issue death certificates. Some early (1893-1896) burial permits are available at the Nevada State Library and Archives; other Nevada death records pre-1911 must be obtained from the county recorder.
