Registration of South Carolina birth records and death records commenced in 1915. The Office of Vital Records and Public Health Statistics, at the South Carolina Department of Health and Environmental Control, maintains the certificates, with copies retained at the vital records office in each of the 46 county public health departments. South Carolina vital records are confidential; certified copies are released to family only, and can be obtained in person, by mail, or by phone, or online through VitalChek. A few cities have historical records: Charleston has birth records dating to 1877 and death records to 1821; Florence and Newberry have some early ledger entries. The Church of England had parishes throughout South Carolina, and the church records include christening and burials dating to 1706. The South Carolina Department of Archives and has some historical South Carolina death records and other genealogical vital records dating to 1641.
