West Virginia vital records are available from the state Vital Registration Office for $12 in most cases. West Virginia birth records are stored centrally from January 1917 to the present and with the Clerk of County Court before that; the same is true for West Virginia death records. Only the person on the certificate, immediate family (including grandparents but not aunts or uncles), or someone with legal interest may obtain the birth or death certificate. Fees may be paid by check or money order; credit card payments incur an additional $30 processing charge, plus $5 if the request is rushed. West Virginia was created during the beginning of the Civil War, after the state of Virginia seceded from the Union; a few dozen counties in the northwest of the state voted to secede from Virginia and remain in the Union. The state was admitted in 1863.
