Death, marriage, and divorce records become public after 50 years, birth records after 100. Before 1858, people in the area now know as Buchanan County had to travel to the county seats at Lebanon, Castlewood, or other places to do business. This new county was named for James Buchanan, the 15th US president, and was formed out of parts of the counties of Tazewell and Russell.
