Buckingham County, VA Birth, Death, Marriage, Divorce Records
Most of Buckingham County's early records were lost when a fire destroyed the courthouse in 1869. Virginia vital records are available to qualified individuals for $12.00 at the Virginia Department of Health. Death, marriage, and divorce records become public after 50 years, birth records after 100. The county was established on May 1, 1761, from the southeastern portion of Albemarle County. In 1778, a small area bordering the James River was given to Cumberland County, and in 1845, another part was given to Appomattox County, with a final adjustment of the Appomattox-Buckingham county line being made in 1860.
