A territory that became known as Charles Mix County was opened to settlement by proclamation of President Lincoln in 1861. The county was subdivided into townships in 1868. In 1874 President Grant withdrew the county from public settlement, but President Hayes re-opened it in 1879. In 2010, the population was about 32% American Indian.
