Charleston County, SC Birth, Death, Marriage, Divorce Records
Charleston County initiated county recording of death records in 1821 and birth records in 1877, prior to the 1915 statewide mandatory recording. Charleston vital records are maintained by the Charleston Public Health Department's Vital Records office in North Charleston; a search with copy costs $12, restricted to in-person/by-mail orders by family members (online through VitalChek). Many 17th-century church records for births and deaths are unrestrictedly available at the Department of Archives and History in Columbia, with a 1915-1960 death index on the state Department of Health website. Historical marriage records pre-1950 may be ordered from the county Probate Judge, and divorce records post-1949 from the County Clerk.
