While birth and death records are not kept at the county level in Nebraska, the Dakota County Clerk's office does provide detailed instructions on where and how to obtain them, namely from the vital records department run by the Department of Health and Human Services in Lincoln, NE. While the Clerk's office does not maintain birth and death records, it does handle others, such as marriage records, and the Register of Deeds handles property records, and others. Those records on file with the Register are available dated back to 1858, not long after the county's formation; records dated after 1998 have been computerized and are available for printing or emailing, while records dated prior to 1998 are available for viewing on the microfilm reader provided at the office.
