Dewey County marriage records are available beginning 1910, burial records beginning 1941. Created in 1883, Dewey County was named for William P. Dewey, Territorial surveyor-general (18731877). Almost all of the county lies in the Cheyenne River Indian Reservation, while the rest lies in the Standing Rock Indian Reservation. In 2000, its racial makeup was over 74% Native American and just over 24% of European extraction. More than 14% spoke Dakota as their first language.
