Douglas County, named after Stephen A. Douglas, the famous U.S. Senator who ran against Lincoln in the 1860 Presidential election and lost, is a fairly small county with only 13,600 residents approximately. All official offices and locations where individuals can obtain certified copies of records are located in the town of Ava, the county seat. The Douglas County Health Department, where qualified individuals can apply for birth and death certificates, is at 603 NW 12th Ave. All pertinent information is provided on the Department website, as well as linking to its parent organization, the Missouri Department of Health and Senior Services, which also provides vital records for all counties at the state level. Also in Ava are the Circuit Clerk and Recorder of Deeds, both in the Douglas County Courthouse at 203 SE Second Ave. The former handles criminal and civil records, while the latter is in charge of marriage and property records.
