Franklin County, TN Birth, Death, Marriage, Divorce Records

Franklin County vital recordsIn Franklin County, Tennessee, records are transferred from Winchester, the county seat, to the Tennessee Vital Records Office (http://health.state.tn.us/vr/Genealogy.htm) that maintains death, marriage, and divorce records for 50 years and birth records for 100 years. Following that time, the records are sent to the Tennessee State Library and Archives (http://www.tn.gov/tsla/history/county/factfranklin.htm) for public use. The private company VitalChek (http://www.vitalchek.com/tennessee-express-vital-records.aspx), contracted to the state, sells copies of records on the Internet, charging a processing fee for its service. In 1861, Franklin County formally threatened to divorce Tennessee if it did not leave the Union, but the resolution to secede became unnecessary when the state chose to join the Confederacy.
