Hampshire County, the oldest West Virginia county, was created in 1753 from Frederick and Augusta Counties, Virginia. Because of the outbreak of the French and Indian War, its organization was delayed until 1757. It is said to be named after Hampshire County, England, which, like its namesake, produces fine hogs.
