As an Indian village called Kecoughtan, the Hampton area was visited by the first English colonists before they reached Jamestown; it is the oldest continuously settled English community in the United States. In 1619, English settlers named their community Elizabeth City, but by 1680 it was called Hampton, and in 1849 it was incorporated as the City of Hampton. In 1952, Elizabeth City County and the town of Phoebus were consolidated with Hampton City.
