The Harrison County Clerk maintains older vital records, which includes divorce records. Harrison County was created in 1785 from Monongalia County and named for Governor Benjamin Harrison of Virginia. He was the father of President William H. Harrison and the great-grandfather of President Benjamin Harrison. During the Civil War, the county's residents were almost evenly divided in their sympathies.
