Harrison County was created in 1785 from Monongalia County and named for Governor Benjamin Harrison of Virginia. He was the father of President William H. Harrison and the great-grandfather of President Benjamin Harrison. During the Civil War, the county's residents were almost evenly divided in their sympathies.
