The Office maintains death, marriage, and divorce records for 50 years, and birth records are housed for 100 years. Copies of birth certificates are $15.00 for the first copy and $5.00 for each additional copy. Death certificates are $7.00 for each copy. Subsequently, records are moved to the Tennessee State Library and Archives (http://www.tn.gov/tsla/history/county/facthawkins.htm). VitalChek (http://www.vitalchek.com/tennessee-express-vital-records.aspx), an independent contractor to the state, makes records available on the Internet for an additional service fee.
