Death, marriage, and divorce records become public after 50 years, birth records after 100. The Library of Virginia houses birth and death records (18531896) and marriage records (18531935). In 1607, Virginia Algonquins and Powhatans, descendants of migratory hunters who had lived in the area for thousands of years, greeted the first English colonists in the area now known as James City County. In August 1619, a Dutch ship brought the first blacks to the colony.
