Copies of marriage licenses and divorce decrees, at a cost of $3 and $.50/page respectively, can be ordered from the Lynchburg City Clerk but are restricted according to privacy laws. Death, marriage and divorce records are open to public access after 50 years, but birth records are open only after 100 years. Lynchburg is an independent city located in central Virginia, originally called New London and settled in 1757, when it was an important trading center. Historical vital records and court records dating back to at least 1853 are maintained at the Archives Division at the Library of Virginia in Richmond.
