Certified copies of Alabama vital records for marriages and divorces can also be obtained at a county health department or through ACHS. Alabama marriage records are available for 1936-present and divorces for 1950-present. Certified copies for earlier marriage certificates are obtained from the probate judge in the county where the license was issued. Early marriage records contain only names and dates; after 1909 they include more detail, such as age, occupations, and parents. Certified copies for earlier Alabama divorce records are obtained from the Clerk of the Circuit Court in which the divorce was granted (the Chancery Court prior to 1917). Divorces prior to 1865 were part of the legislative Senate and House Journal records.
