As a result of the 1803 Louisiana Purchase, the United States acquired most of the area now known as North Dakota from the French. True settlement of the area was achieved during the construction of the railroad during the 1870s and 1880s. As of January 1, 2008, the North Dakota Department of Health no longer issues certified copies of marriage records. All certified copies of North Dakota marriage records are issued by the county where the license was originally purchased and filed and are available for a fee. See http://www.ndhealth.gov/vital/marriage.htm for a list of the appropriate counties and officials. Copies of North Dakota divorce records can be obtained only from the county clerk or recorder in the county in which the divorce or annulment was decreed and are available for a fee. See http://www.ndhealth.gov/vital/divorce.htm for a list of the appropriate counties and contact information for these North Dakota vital records.
