Birth records older than 100 years, and death, marriage, and divorce records older than 50 years, are usually considered public; more recent birth, death, and marriage records are available only to certain people from the Health Statistics Center, generally for $12. The legendary Mary Ingles, first European woman in Mason County, was taken to Ohio by Shawnee Indians; she escaped, returning through the wilderness. Named for Virginia native George Mason, the county was created in 1804 from Kanawha County. Dissatisfied with its state's rights provisions, Mason rejected the United States Constitution that he had helped frame.
