Birth records older than 100 years, and death, marriage, and divorce records older than 50 years, are usually considered public; more recent birth, death, and marriage records are available only to certain people from the Health Statistics Center, generally for $12. The legendary Mary Ingles, first European woman in Mason County, was taken to Ohio by Shawnee Indians; she escaped, returning through the wilderness. Named for Virginia native George Mason, the county was created in 1804 from Kanawha County.
