For births older than 100 years, visit the searchable database at the South Dakota Department of Health. McCook County birth records are available beginning in 1880 and marriage records from 1887 on. There are alphabetized burial records on cards, while cemetery records are kept by the sexton of each individual cemetery. Formed by the territorial legislature in 1873 from Hanson County, McCook County was named for Civil War General Edwin Stanton McCook, the former Dakota Territory governor.
