Monroe County, named after the 5th President James Monroe, has a number of offices and organizations that service the area and provide access to local records and historical documents. The Monroe County Historical Society, for one, operates a Research Center in the county seat of Paris, at 112 South Main in Room #5. The Center has a huge amount of records that are available to the public. The Society has a number of records in an online archive that is open to the public, as well as operating a museum within the Monroe County Courthouse at 300 North Main, also in Paris. Also in the courthouse are the Recorder of Deeds, the office responsible for property and marriage records which date from the year of the county's formation, 1831, to the present, and the Circuit Clerk, the office in charge of court records, both civil and criminal.
