Montague County, TX Birth, Death, Marriage, Divorce Records

Montague County vital recordsThe Montague County Clerk stores vital records for births and deaths (1903 to the present) and marriages (late 1900s to the present). Divorce records are in the hands of the District Clerk. On Christmas Eve, 1857, the state legislature established Montague County, twenty years after the Texas Revolution. Far from reproducing the slaveholding plantation society that characterized the state, Montague County voters rejected secession 86 to 50 in 1861. This may have been more because the white settlers needed federal protection from Indian raids than from loyalty to the Union. The Indians were finally driven from the county in the early 1870s.
