Montgomery County vital recordsInitially called Tryon County until its name was changed to its current one in 1784, Montgomery County was originally founded in 1772. The Montgomery County's Department of History and Archives operates out of the Old County Courthouse in the county seat of Fonda, NY. The archives has tens of thousands of genealogical and historical documents, books, and records on file among which are census records for the state for every decade from 1790 to 1870, civil records from 1793 to the present, information on over 500 family surnames and over 400 genealogy books, cemetery records, property records dating from 1772 to 1778, and much more. The office of the County Clerk has all additional property records dating after 1778, as well as numerous other types of records. Many local villages and towns in Montgomery County have their own town clerk who maintains the birth and death records for that town.
