Motley County was formed from Young and Bexar Territories; it was created August 21, 1876, and organized February 5, 1891. The county was named in honor of Dr. Junius William Mottley, 1811-1836; he was a signer of the Texas Declaration of Independence and an aide to General Rusk at the Battle of San Jacinto. There he was mortally wounded.
