The first settlement in the area was the now-county seat of New Madrid which is where both the Recorder of Deeds and the County Clerk are both located in the New Madrid County Courthouse on 450 Main St. Together, the offices handle all pertinent record keeping for the area and are the local sources of property, marriage, divorce, and other records for genealogists and researchers. While those two offices are in charge of most records, the vital records department of the New Madrid County Health Department is in charge of birth and death records, with the former listed from 1910, and the latter from 1980.
