Newton County vital recordsNewton County's Clerk of the Chancery Court is, among other duties, responsible for maintaining the area's property records, as well as divorce, civil, and others. The office has records on file dated from 1876 to the present. The Clerk of the Circuit Court is responsible for indexing the marriage records for the county, however most of the oldest records were destroyed in an unfortunate fire in 1911. Additionally, the Mississippi Department of Health's Public Health Statistics department also maintains marriage records dated from 1926 to the present, as well as birth and death records, both of which are available dated from 1912. The Newton County Historical and Genealogical Society operates an Archives center at 15309 Highway 15 in Decatur, MS, which is open Monday through Friday from 9:00AM until 1:00PM, although by appointment only, which can be made by email or by phone at (601) 635-2350.
