Pocahontas County was created in 1821 from Bath, Pendleton and Randolph Counties and named for Pocahontas, daughter of Chief Powhatan. The most extensive battle of the Civil War in West Virginia, the Battle of Droop Mountain, was fought in 1863 within the county.
