For a fee, and with proper identification, eligible individuals may acquire Potter County birth and death records (since July 1905) at the county Register of Deeds. For older birth records, see the South Dakota Department of Health searchable database. Vital records may also be ordered: in person or by mail (by personal check or money order payable to South Dakota Department of Health); or online by credit card at VitalChek. Marriage records are available beginning in 1890. The county was created in 1875 and organized in 1883 as Ashmore County, but in 1877 the name was changed to honor territorial legislator Joel A. Potter.
