The Rio Arriba County Clerk's office provides the legal document detailing individual's right to inspect public records
, as well as the steps interested parties must take and all restrictions and requirements. The Clerk's office is in the courthouse at 7 Main Street in Tierra Amarilla, the county seat, and all records on file there, which include marriage and property records, are open to the public for viewing and research. While many record types are handled at the local level, the New Mexico Department of Health
maintains birth and death records for the entire state. New Mexico created the Dept of Health in 1919 to maintain those records, and it has acted as their custodian since then. While all records with the County Clerk are open to the public, birth and death records are closed until reaching a specified age: 100 years old for birth records, and 50 years for death records.
