Steele County vital recordsResearching Steele County vital records can either be done at the County Recorder's office, or at the Steele County Historical Society. The Recorder, who is responsible for all official county records, has two locations, one in Blooming Prairie and the other in Ellendale. The Vital Statistics section of the office can be emailed or called at (507) 444-7490 to set up appointments or inquire as to availability of specific records. The Steele County Historical Society operates a Genealogy Research Center which has a large number of official and unofficial records and local historical accounts. The Society will also perform searches for those unable to themselves, at the cost of $10 per hour with a half hour minimum charge for all research. Both the Steele County Recorder's office, as well as the Historical Society are located in the county seat of Owatonna, MN.
