Swift County, situated in west-central Minnesota and founded in 1870, has a relatively low population with less than 10,000 total residents. The County Treasurer counts among his duties the recording and managing of the county's vital statistics and genealogical records. The office, located within the Courthouse at 301 14th St N, in Benson, MN, accepts walk-ins and appointments from those who wish to engage in genealogical research. Treasurer staff is on hand to provide free research assistance during regular business hours, as well. The Treasurer department provides birth and death record applications
via its section in the county website. The Swift County Historical Society also operates a Research Library
that the public can utilize, though there is a small fee required for nonmembers to search through the available resources and use the microfilm reader and printer. Research materials at the library include state census records from 1875 to 1905, the naturalization records for the county, and much more.
