Thurston County is located on the eastern border of Nebraska, and the entire land area of the county is comprised of two Native American reservations. Even though the population is well under 20,000, which is the standard Nebraska uses to determine if county government offices will be combined, only the Thurston County Clerk and Register of Deeds are placed together at 106 5th St in Pender, NE. The office is the official custodian of property and marriage records. The Clerk of the District Court, while at the same address, is a separate office which keeps the district civil and criminal court records. To research or obtain copies of birth and death records older than 50 years, those interested will need to contact or visit the Department of Health and Human Services vital records department
. Vital records dated more recently than 50 years are restricted to the registrar or his immediate family.
