Vernon County, MO Birth, Death, Marriage, Divorce Records

Vernon County vital recordsVernon County is one of many counties that suffered the loss of its courthouse in the mid 1800s when it was burned down by Union soldiers during the Civil War. The entire county, in fact, suffered a large amount of damage during that period as it was one of only four total counties where all residents were completely and forcefully evacuated in an attempt to deprive Confederate guerrillas of supplies and support. All four counties took a long time to fully recover from the evacuation and subsequent devastation. The entire town of Nevada was burned to the ground during this period, as well. It is the current county seat and is where the Recorder's office and Circuit Court's office are both located. The Recorder is custodian for marriage and property records, as well as others, and the Circuit Court handles court-related records, such as civil and criminal cases.
