They also have a Genealogy Department which offers a large number of records, most of which being in 1871 and continue to the present. The Vernon Historical and Genealogical Society also has detailed information on the vital records for the parish, including a number of records, research points and forms. The Society is a group of volunteers that assist individuals with research into their own genealogy and do not charge for their services. Their website is very thorough and would be a great help to anyone interested in researching records for the area.

There are a number of theories as to parish acquired its name, although the state of Louisiana maintains that it was named after the longtime home of first President George Washington, Mount Vernon.
