Wilkin County went through several incarnations before it reached the final name and area it exists with today. The area of the county was initially occupied by Pembina County, which was formed into Wilkin, which was known as Toombs during that period. Several part of the county were then split off to join with other counties, and the final area was renamed Andy Johnson County. Some years later, the county changed its name once again, this time to Wilkin County, which stuck throughout the years to present day. The Treasurer Department for the county is the office responsible for the land and vital records of the area.
