Anybody can obtain public records: birth records older than 100 years and death and marriage records older than 50 years. The County Clerk provides vital records before 1917 and divorce records. Created in 1848 from Virginia counties Jackson and Wood, Wirt County was named for author, orator, and lawyer William Wirt. In 1859, oil was discovered in Burning Springs (named for the natural gas that sometimes burned up through the town's springs). During the Civil War, Confederates incinerated the town with its stored oil.
