This database consists of marriage records from many Virginia counties; this update to the database adds records from Greene, Patrick, and Rockbridge counties to those of Albemarle, Charlottesville, Essex (including Old Rappahannock), Lee, Loudoun, Marion, Marshall, Page, Pittsylvania, Pulaski, Raleigh, Richmond, Shenandoah, Stafford Taylor, Wayne, Wetzel, and Wirt counties. Most of these records are quite complete because a state law passed in 1853 required that county and independent city clerks issue marriage licenses and keep marriage registers. Before a license was issued, the parties to be married had to offer the following information: full names, ages, places of birth and residence, proposed marriage date and place, marital status (widowed or single), parents' names, groom's occupation, and minister's name. After the marriage ceremony, the minister returned the information to the clerk, who recorded it in a marriage register.

This database is a collection of Indiana marriage indexes covering various years and counties. To see specifically what is included in this database (counties and years covered), please see the bottom of this page. This collection is comprised of indexes created by two agencies - the Works Progress Administration (WPA) and Jordan Dodd of Liahona Research (who extracted information from records on microfilm at the Family History Library (FHL) in Salt Lake City, Utah). Information contained in these indexes includes:

  • Spouses' names
  • Marriage date
  • Marriage county
  • Source information

For the source information you will see either "Works Progress Administration" or, "Family History Library, Salt Lake City, Utah" (for entries created by Jordan Dodd). If available, a microfilm number is provided for records from the FHL. Likewise, the WPA entries provide original record locations, as well as book information (title, volume, page number), useful for finding individuals in the printed versions of the WPA indexes.

Note: You may find duplicate records of the same marriage in this database, with the only difference being the source. These records were not removed because Ancestry.com wanted to provide the most amount of information about a marriage to the customer.

History of Marriage Records in Indiana:

Marriage licenses became mandatory in 1800. Beginning with the formation of each respective county to the present, the county clerk's office has issued and kept marriage licenses and certificates. Both marriage transcripts (1882) and marriage applications, beginning in 1906 (with additional family information), may have been used in various counties. Prior to 1940 it was necessary for a couple to obtain a license from the county in which the female resided. If an ancestor's marriage record cannot be located in Indiana, check the Cincinnati marriage records. Cincinnati was a "Gretna Green" (no-questions-asked marriage locale) for Ohio, Kentucky, and Indiana.

Taken from Carol L. Maki, "Indiana," in Red Book: American State, County, and Town Sources, 3d ed., ed. Alice Eichholz. (Provo, Utah: Ancestry, 2004).

About the WPA Records:

The WPA began to index vital records, county-by-county for the entire state of Indiana, but the agency was abolished before the indexing was completed. The WPA index includes marriages for eighty-six of the ninety-two Indiana counties.

About the FHL Records:

The marriage date provide in these entries is usually the date of marriage as given in the original entry. However, when no marriage date is given (e.g., the "marriage return" was not provided to the record keeper), the date of the license is used. In a few cases, a marriage will be listed twice, but in two different counties. This most often happened when a couple obtained a license in one county, but were actually married in another.

I Found An Ancestor In This Database….What Now?

Marriage records are great sources for genealogists because they document an individual in a particular place and time as well as provide details about that person's marriage.

It is important that you use the information found in this database to locate your ancestor in the records that this index references. Usually more information is available in the records themselves than is found in an index. For example, marriage records sometimes provide the birth dates and places of the bride and groom, their parents' names, their addresses, and witnesses' names, in addition to the information listed in this index.

Copies of the WPA printed indexes may be located at Allen County Public Library in Fort Wayne, Indiana.

Allen County Public Library
900 Webster Street
Fort Wayne, IN 46802
Phone: (260) 421-1200
Fax: (260) 422-9688

Some of these printed indexes may also be available from the Indiana State Library or on microfilm from the FHL.

Locating Originals:

Because county clerks are responsible for maintaining marriage records, the originals are kept with them. To obtain a copy, contact the appropriate county clerk and inquire about their research facilities or the procedure for obtaining copies of records. These original records maintained by the county clerk may also be available on microfilm from the FHL and may be some of the sources used to compile this database as described above. For many researchers, it may be easier to check the FHL records first, before contacting the county clerk.

Counties and Years:

This list shows the counties and corresponding year ranges in which the majority of the records included in this database fall. You will occasionally find records for other years not listed here. These other years may be typos, or there just may not be very many marriages for those years and counties represented in this database and therefore, are not included in this list.

Contained in this index are Michigan death records from 1897 to 1920. The entire collection is arranged chronologically and alphabetically by county with the only exception being Wayne County, which follows Wexford. City of Detroit records, as part of Wayne County, are always at the end of each year. In total there are 83 counties and while their boundaries have not changed since 1897 they have been adjusted. Within each county, the records are arranged numerically by certificate number.

Death records contain information about a person's death, such as the date of death, place of death, sometimes the names of the mother and father, and even the physician who attended the death. Death certificates issued by state and local governments will often include the place of residence, and the mother's maiden name. For general advice on obtaining death records see "Death Certificates" by Kathi Sittner in the Learning Center.

Had your ancestor resided in Michigan during this time period they would have most likely worked in manufacturing, which was a major industry in the state. Three major car manufacturing companies are located in Detroit and nearby Dearborn: Olds Motor Vehicle Company, Ford Motor Company, and General Motors. Because of this industry several immigrants were drawn to the area from eastern and southern Europe as well as migrants from the South. Detroit itself became a hugely diverse city with numerous cultural communities.

Information in this index:

  • Given name
  • Surname
  • Death dates
  • Place of death
  • Physician who attended death

This database contains marriage information from selected areas of Mississippi from 1776-1935. A complete list of which counties are included in this index is provided below. Please note that not all counties are included. Information that may be found in this database for each individual includes their name, spouse's name, and marriage date and location. Marriage records are great sources for genealogists because they document an individual in a particular place and time as well as provide details about that person's marriage.

It is important that you use the information found in this database to locate your ancestor in the original records that this index references. Usually more information is available in the records themselves than is found in an index. For example, marriage records sometimes provide the birth dates and places of the bride and groom, their parents' names, their addresses, and witnesses' names, in addition to the information found in this index.

This collection represents information originating on courthouse marriage licenses in various counties in Mississippi. Copies of these records may be obtained from the county clerk in the county in which the license was issued. This was usually the county that the bride was from. Microfilmed copies of these records may also be found at the Family History Library (FHL) in Salt Lake City or possibly at the state archives.

Counties and years included in this database:

Each county name is followed by the approximate years and number of individuals indexed. Please note that this index is not a comprehensive index of all marriages occurring within these counties for these years. Therefore, if you do not find your ancestors in this index it does not necessarily mean that they were not married during these time periods or in these locations.

This database is an index to deaths that occurred in North Carolina between 1908 and 2004. This index was created by three agencies.

The first portion was created by Ancestry from microfilm copies of county death indexes obtained from the North Carolina State Archives and Records Section (see the bottom of this page for a list of counties and years covered). Records from this portion WILL include an IMAGE of the corresponding microfilm record. Be sure to view this image when it is available as additional information about your relative (such as volume and page number of death certificate) may be listed on it.

The second portion of this index is statewide and covers the years 1968-1996. It was obtained by Ancestry from the North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services. This portion of the index does NOT include any images.

The third portion of this index is also statewide but covers the years 1997-2004. It was obtained by Ancestry from the North Carolina State Center for Health Statistics. This portion of the index also does NOT include any images.

The following information is included in this database:

  • Name of deceased*
  • Death date*
  • Death place (usually a county)*
  • Age at time of death*
  • Gender
  • Race*
  • Marital status
  • Autopsy (yes or no)
  • Hospital
  • Bed Code
  • Attendant
  • Mode of burial
  • Father's surname
  • Place of injury
  • Birth date
  • Birthplace
  • Residence
  • Social Security Number

Note: An "*" denotes information that may be available for all records. All other information may only be listed for records from 1968-1996.

Where to Go From Here:

Death records are important records for genealogists because generally they provide details about an individual's death as well as details about an individual's life. With the information gathered from this index you might be able to obtain a copy of the original death record from the North Carolina Office of Vital Records, the State Archives, or the Register of Deeds in the county where the death occurred (see extended description for more information about this). It is important to use information obtained from this database to locate your ancestor in the original records that this index references, as usually additional information is contained in the original record that could further benefit your research.

More About North Carolina Deaths:

On 10 March 1913, the North Carolina General Assembly ratified an act requiring the registration of births and deaths in the state; virtually full compliance was achieved by 1920, with some delayed birth records for earlier dates eventually added. The indexes to these records are available in the county where the event took place or on microfilm at the North Carolina State Archives and the Family History Library (FHL) in Salt Lake City.

Copies of death records can be obtained from the office of the County Register of Deeds and from the Office of Vital Records (North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services, Office of Vital Records, 1903 Mail Service Center, Raleigh, NC 27699-1903). The North Carolina State Archives also has death certificates for those who died between 1913 and 1955 on microfilm in the Search Room. The microfilm collection of the FHL has death certificates (1906-1994); still births (1814-1953); fetal deaths (1960-1974), and an index (1906-1967).

Taken from Johni Cerny and Gareth L. Mark, "North Carolina," Red Book ed. Alice Eichholz (Provo, Utah: Ancestry, 2004).

Why can't I see the Social Security Number?

If the Social Security Number is not visible on the record index it is because Ancestry.com does not provide this number for any person that has passed away within the past 10 years.
