Most Common Surname Beginning with "C": Clark
The surname Clark originated in medieval times and is derived originally from the religious word cleric, but also came to designate the occupation of a scribe, or clerk. The Olde English word clerc dates back to the seventh century and referred to members of the church. The more lowly clercs or clerics in those days were permitted to marry, which helped propagate the surname. Clerics were typically the only ones able to read and write, which is why in later years, clerk came to mean scribe, and the surname was adapted to include the most common spelling to date as Clark.
